Burrell homers as Rays edge A's

04/27/2010 - St. Petersburg, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Oakland Athletics, 8-6, in the opener of a two-game set at Tropicana Field.

Jason Bartlett went 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Rays, who have won three straight games and maintained the best record in baseball at 15-5. Reid Brignac homered and B.J. Upton contributed two runs scored in the win.

Wade Davis (2-1) earned the victory despite allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings.

Cliff Pennington belted a three-run homer and finished with four hits and a career-high four runs batted in for the Athletics, who have dropped two of three. Gabe Gross drove in the other run for Oakland while Adam Rosales added four hits an RBI and a run scored in the losing effort.

Ben Sheets (1-2) absorbed the loss after he yielded eight runs on nine hits in four innings.

The Rays scored four runs in the second inning. Evan Longoria doubled leading off and scored when Carlos Pena followed with a single to left field. Upton then laced a single and scored on a double by John Jaso. With runners on second and third and two outs, a two-run single by Bartlett gave the Rays a 4-0 lead.

The visitors answered with four runs in the third. Pennington's three-run homer -- which also scored Eric Patterson and Rosales -- brought the A's within one before Gross' sacrifice fly later in the frame knotted the contest.

Burrell's three-run blast in the bottom portion of the third again put Tampa Bay in front. Sheets got the first two outs, but issued a walk to Pena before Upton stroked a base hit. Burrell then belted a hanging curveball over the wall in left field for a 7-4 margin.

Brignac's leadoff home run in the fourth pushed the lead the four.

Oakland drew within 8-5 in the sixth via Pennington's RBI ground-rule double. An RBI single by Rosales in the eighth made it a two-run game, but Tampa Bay closer Rafael Soriano tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of 2010.

This marked the first start by Sheets against Tampa Bay...The A's outhit the Rays, 13-12...Pennington has 15 RBI this season...Oakland stranded eight base runners...Rosales was 4-for-4.
